Job Description
English Academic Coach

Are you an English graduate who wants to drive GCSE progress before the May exam window?

*** English Academic Coach
*** Immediate start until June 2026
*** £82 - £105 per day (depending on experience)
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Sandwell
*** Prepare English GCSE students for May examinations

The Role:
The appointed English Academic Coach will work with the English department to raise attainment for targeted GCSE pupils ahead of the May exam series. You will deliver structured 1:1 and small group intervention that links directly to the department’s sequencing, current texts, and exam priorities. You will pre-teach and revisit key vocabulary, model close reading, and train pupils to deconstruct questions and select precise evidence. You will coach students through high-impact paragraph structures for analysis and evaluation, improving clarity, comparison, and use of methods and terminology. You will also tighten accuracy through SPaG and sentence control, building pupils’ ability to write under time pressure. You will use quick diagnostics, short retrieval tasks, and exam-style practice to identify gaps, then adapt sessions to target what is holding pupils back. You will track attendance and outcomes, feedback to teachers, and help pupils build confidence, stamina, and exam routines in the run up to May.

The Candidate:
You are calm, consistent, and confident explaining English concepts in a simple, structured way. You build strong relationships quickly and keep sessions purposeful, so pupils stay focused and improve week to week. You take direction from the department, respond well to feedback, and care about measurable progress, not noise.

  • Degree at 2:2 or above, English, English Literature, or related subject preferred
  • Confident with GCSE English Language and Literature skills, including analysis, comparison, and exam technique
  • Comfortable delivering 1:1 and small group intervention with clear outcomes
  • Strong written communication, you model answers and give specific feedback
  • Experience tutoring, mentoring, or working with young people is desirable
  • Professional approach to safeguarding, confidentiality, and school routines
  • Enhanced DBS required, or willingness to apply immediately

The School:
This Good secondary school in Sandwell has clear systems, strong routines, and a focused approach to GCSE outcomes. The English department works collaboratively and uses targeted intervention to close gaps for key cohorts. You will receive direction, resources, and a clear plan for priorities, so your work stays aligned to what pupils need for the May examinations and you can make an impact quickly.
