Job Description
English Academic Coach

Want to boost GCSE outcomes and build evidence for teacher training? Coach small groups and individuals so exam responses are sharp and focused.

*** English Academic Coach
*** Immediate start until May 2026
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** ‘Outstanding’ secondary school, Ladywood
*** 1:1 and small group GCSE English support for exam preparation

The Role:
You will deliver targeted GCSE support that mirrors department sequencing. You will teach close reading, question deconstruction and rapid note making. You will model paragraph structures for analysis and evaluation, strengthen comparison skills, and tighten use of evidence and terminology. You will rehearse planning for fiction and non-fiction tasks, refine introductions and conclusions, and improve accuracy in grammar and punctuation. You will run short clinics on anthology poetry, Shakespeare and 19th-century prose, plus unseen approaches. You will use past-paper items, quick diagnostics and timed drills, then feed outcomes back to class teachers so next steps are clear. You will keep brief impact notes, maintain tidy resources and support calm starts, transitions and homework routines.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You communicate clearly and give precise feedback. You plan lean sessions that move pupils on.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in English Language, English Literature or a closely related subject.
  • Communication, confident written and spoken English.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education with a strong interest in English pedagogy.
  • Experience supporting young people, tutoring or mentoring is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Outstanding’ Ladywood secondary runs simple, consistent routines so lessons stay purposeful. The English team shares model answers, planning frames and common success criteria, which makes intervention align cleanly with class teaching. Low-stakes checks and short mocks identify gaps early. You will have access to curated text extracts, vocabulary packs and writing frames, plus weekly subject CPD and coaching that gives you actionable next steps.

How to Apply
Apply through the job advert with your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Roles may close early if filled.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
