Job Description
SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant

Could you give pupils with complex needs the steady support they need to feel safe, included, and ready to learn? Are you looking for meaningful primary SEN experience before moving into teaching, educational psychology, or clinical psychology?

*** SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** £85 - £101 per day
*** ‘Outstanding’ primary school, Ward of Selly Oak
*** 1:1 and small group support within the school’s SEN unit (Complex Needs)

The Role:
Work within the school’s SEN unit, supporting pupils with complex needs through structured 1:1 work and small-group intervention. You will help children follow routines, access learning at the right level, stay engaged, and build confidence, while working closely with teaching staff and the SENCO to monitor progress and respond to individual need. Schools are expected to use a graduated approach to identify need, put support in place, and review its impact.

The Candidate:
You are calm, patient, and able to build trust through consistency and clear communication. You want practical school-based experience, you can stay composed in a busy primary setting, and you are interested in how structured support helps pupils with additional needs access education more successfully. This role would suit a graduate who wants relevant SEN experience before progressing into teaching or psychology-related training.

Requirements
  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to pursue a career in educational or clinical psychology.

The School:
This ‘Outstanding’ primary school in the Ward of Selly Oak offers the chance to build valuable SEN experience in a setting where inclusion, structure, and purposeful support matter. You will work as part of a specialist team within the SEN unit, gaining direct exposure to day-to-day SEND provision and the practical strategies schools use to support pupils with complex needs. Government guidance on Enhanced DBS eligibility for work with children was updated on 20 January 2026, and regulated activity with children can require an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check.

How to Apply
Apply today with your CV to be considered for this SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant role. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to discuss next steps and arrange interview. Early applications are encouraged, as the school may appoint before the closing date.
