Job Description
Maths Academic Coach

Can you help GCSE pupils make better progress when Maths starts to feel like a wall instead of a subject? Are you looking for a secondary school role that gives you proper classroom experience before teacher training?

*** Maths Academic Coach
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** £90 - £110 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston
*** 1:1 and small group support across GCSE Maths

The Role:
Work with the Maths department to provide focused support for GCSE pupils who need extra help with number, algebra, ratio, problem solving, and exam technique. You will deliver 1:1 and small group intervention, reinforce class learning, support revision, and keep teachers updated on pupil progress. Teaching assistants support teachers in the classroom and help children with learning activities, while secondary teachers work with pupils aged 11 to 16, or up to 19 in schools with sixth forms.

The Candidate:
You are clear, organised, and able to explain ideas in a way pupils can actually follow. You want practical secondary school experience, enjoy helping students build confidence in Maths, and are keen to develop the classroom skills needed for a future in teaching.

Requirements
• Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
• Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
• Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
• Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
• Career Goals – A desire to train as a teacher and build a long-term career in education.

The School:
This ‘Good’ secondary school in the Ward of Edgbaston offers the chance to build valuable subject-based experience in a well-structured Maths department. You will join a setting where targeted intervention matters, classroom support has a clear purpose, and extra academic guidance is used to help pupils make measurable progress at GCSE. GOV.UK’s enhanced DBS eligibility guidance was updated on 20 January 2026, and regulated activity with children can require an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check.

How to Apply
Apply today with your CV to be considered for this Maths Academic Coach role. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to discuss next steps and arrange interview. Early applications are encouraged, as the school may appoint before the closing date.
