Job Description
Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant

Could you see yourself supporting pupils with additional needs in a role that gives you real insight into school-based SEN provision? Are you looking to build strong experience before moving into educational or clinical psychology?

*** Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** September 2025 – July 2027
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** ‘Good’ primary school, Wolverhampton
*** 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEN requirements

The Role:
Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEN requirements across the school day. You will help children access learning, follow routines, stay engaged, and build confidence, while working closely with the class teacher and SENCO to track progress and respond to need. The SEND Code of Practice says schools should use a graduated approach to identify needs, put support in place, and review the impact of that support.

The Candidate:
You are calm, observant, and able to build trust through consistency and clear communication. You want practical experience in a primary setting, you are interested in how children with additional needs are supported in school, and you are keen to develop the kind of insight that is useful for a future in educational or clinical psychology. SEN teaching assistants support teachers to help children with disabilities and special educational needs, which makes this strong grounding for psychology-related pathways.

Requirements
  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to pursue a career in educational or clinical psychology.

The School:
This ‘Good’ primary school in Wolverhampton offers the chance to build valuable SEN experience in a setting where structure, patience, and consistent support matter. You will work closely with teaching staff and the SENCO in a role that gives you direct exposure to day-to-day SEND provision, practical intervention, and the strategies schools use to help pupils access learning more successfully. National Careers says SEN teaching assistants support teachers to help children with disabilities and special educational needs, while the SEND framework sets clear expectations on schools to deliver effective support and review its impact.
