*** Starting a career in educational psychology?
Â
If you are a Psychology graduate who wants experience that supports a future career in educational psychology, this Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant role gives you a full academic year in a busy, well-structured primary setting. You will support pupils who need additional input, build your understanding of behaviour and learning barriers, and develop the practical school skills that help you stand out when you apply for a PGCE or future Psychology routes.
Â
The Role
- You will support pupils 1:1 and in small groups, focusing on engagement, confidence and progress.
- You will deliver targeted interventions in early reading, comprehension, writing and maths, linked to classroom teaching.
- You will support pupils with additional needs by using clear routines, visual prompts and step-by-step instructions.
- You will help pupils regulate and manage transitions using calm, consistent strategies agreed with the teacher and SENCO.
- You will observe behaviour and learning patterns and record what triggers difficulties and what helps.
- You will work alongside teachers and the SENCO to follow support plans and contribute to meaningful progress updates.
- You will support whole-class learning by checking understanding and keeping pupils on task without creating reliance.
- You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.
Â
The Candidate
- You will have a 2:2 degree or above in Psychology (or a closely related subject).
- You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
- You will communicate clearly and build positive, professional relationships with pupils and staff.
- You will be calm, patient and consistent, especially when pupils feel overwhelmed or dysregulated.
- You will be reliable and proactive, and you will follow agreed strategies rather than improvising.
- You will have an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or you will be willing to obtain one.
Â
The School
This large 3-form entry primary school in Wolverhampton is organised, well-resourced and used to running targeted support at scale. You will work as part of a wider team, with clear routines and consistent expectations across classes. You will gain broad exposure across EYFS and KS1/KS2 depending on need, and you will build strong, practical experience that links directly to educational psychology pathways.
