If you want school experience that genuinely strengthens your application for a PGCE, this Graduate Teaching Assistant role gives you structured, meaningful responsibility in KS1 or KS2. You will support pupils with Autism, ADHD and social, emotional and behavioural needs (often described as EBD/SEMH), helping them regulate, engage and access learning through consistent routines, clear expectations and targeted intervention.
The Role
- You will provide 1:1 support for a pupil with Autism and ADHD, following agreed strategies and targets.
- You will deliver small group support for pupils with additional needs, linked directly to class learning.
- You will use visual prompts, now-and-next boards, and clear step-by-step instructions to reduce overwhelm.
- You will support emotional regulation using calm language, planned movement breaks, and structured transitions.
- You will adapt tasks so pupils can access learning without lowering expectations.
- You will reinforce behaviour plans and boundaries consistently, using de-escalation and positive routines.
- You will support core skills through short interventions in early reading/phonics, writing, or maths as needed.
- You will log progress, triggers and what works, then feedback clearly to the class teacher and SENCO.
- You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.
The Candidate
- You will have a 2:2 degree or above (Psychology, Childhood Studies, Education, Health and Social Care, Sociology or a related subject is ideal).
- You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
- You will be calm, patient and consistent, especially when behaviour is challenging.
- You will communicate clearly and keep professional boundaries with pupils.
- You will be reliable, proactive and comfortable following plans, not winging it.
- You will have an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or you will be willing to obtain one.
