Job Description
Science Academic Coach

Do you want a full academic year in a ‘Good’ secondary school, helping KS4 pupils improve GCSE science through focused 1:1 and small group support?

*** Science Academic Coach
*** September 2026 to July 2027 (Academic Year)
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston
*** 1:1 and small group academic support across KS4 Science

The Role:
You will support Year 10 and Year 11 pupils to improve GCSE outcomes in biology, chemistry and physics. You will deliver planned 1:1 and small group sessions linked to current class topics, with tight routines and clear outcomes.

You will target the common mark-losers: weak vocabulary, gaps in core concepts, insecure practical knowledge, poor graph and data skills, and unclear written answers. You will teach pupils to read questions properly, spot command words, select the right knowledge, then apply it with precision.

Sessions will follow a consistent routine: recap, model, guided practice, independent attempt, then a quick check so you catch misconceptions early. You will keep brief outcomes and feed back to teachers so support stays aligned to topic tests and mocks. You will also support in class when needed, reinforcing focus and routines.

The Candidate:
You bring clear explanations, calm authority and strong organisation. You keep pupils on task, break concepts into small steps, and push accuracy without adding pressure.

  • Degree at 2:2 or above, a science subject is ideal
  • Confident supporting KS4 across biology, chemistry and physics
  • Comfortable delivering 1:1 and small group sessions with pace and clear routines
  • Experience with young people through tutoring, mentoring, coaching, youth work, or volunteering is desirable
  • Professional approach to safeguarding, confidentiality and behaviour expectations
  • Enhanced DBS required, plus right to work checks, references and standard school vetting

The School:
You will work in the Ward of Edgbaston, in south-west Birmingham. The school runs clear systems and consistent expectations, with intervention planned into the week and linked to classroom teaching. You will get direction on focus pupils and priorities from the department, with regular feedback so you improve quickly.

Apply Now:
Send your CV to be considered. If shortlisted, you will get a call to confirm availability, relevant experience, and confidence supporting KS4 science. Checks follow, then the school stage is arranged for the start date.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
