Job Description
SEN Academic Mentor

Want a role where your support is visible lesson by lesson?

Provide steady 1:1 help so one student can learn with confidence.

*** SEN Academic Mentor
*** Immediate start, ongoing opportunity
*** £86 - £92 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Wednesbury
*** 1:1 support for a student with special educational needs

The Role:
You will be the student’s consistent point of contact across the day. Before each lesson, you will check equipment, preview the task, and agree a simple target for the hour. In class, you will reduce cognitive load by breaking instructions into short steps, using visuals and checklists, and modelling a clean first example. You will give quiet prompts to sustain focus, plan short regulation breaks, and guide a calm return to learning. You will help the student record key points, organise homework, and submit work on time. After lessons, you will log outcomes, capture what worked, and share next actions with subject teachers and the SENCO so support stays joined up. Safeguarding and behaviour procedures are followed at all times.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You are composed, practical and clear. You value routine, notice small wins, and nudge the student toward independence rather than doing the work for them.

  • Degree at 2:2 or above in any subject; Psychology preferred.
  • Strong communication, concise written notes and clear spoken instructions.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Genuine interest in SEN, regulation strategies and pupil wellbeing.
  • Experience with children or young people is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Wednesbury secondary runs predictable routines that keep corridors calm and lessons purposeful. Departments share sequencing and model responses, so your support mirrors the methods pupils see in class. Reading and vocabulary are embedded across subjects. The inclusion team operates a simple plan–do–review cycle, provides practical tools such as timers, task cards and visual schedules, and checks in weekly so next steps are clear. New staff receive a structured induction, access to short CPD sessions, and regular coaching with precise, usable targets.
