Interim Assistant Headteacher – Primary SEND School – Birmingham - ASAP Start
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Interim Assistant Headteacher to join a caring and nurturing primary special school in Birmingham. This welcoming school supports children with a range of complex needs, including Autism, Moderate Learning Difficulties, and communication challenges. The leadership team is dedicated, compassionate, and focused on ensuring every child feels valued, supported, and able to achieve their very best.

As an Assistant Headteacher, you will play a key role in leading and developing high-quality teaching and learning across the school. You will work closely with the Headteacher and senior leadership team to support staff, champion inclusive practice, and help children thrive both academically and emotionally.

This position would suit an experienced Assistant Headteacher or senior leader with a strong background in SEND or special school settings, who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with additional needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strong leadership and day-to-day support to staff across the school.
  • Drive high standards of teaching, learning, and pastoral care in line with the school’s inclusive values.
  • Support staff development and promote a positive, collaborative working culture.
  • Oversee areas such as inclusion, behaviour, attendance, and pupil wellbeing.
  • Work closely with families, external agencies, and the wider community to ensure joined-up support for every child.
  • Model excellent practice and contribute to the ongoing development of the school’s provision.
Requirements:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and leadership experience within a SEND or special school setting.
  • A clear understanding of primary education and the specific challenges of teaching pupils with additional needs.
  • Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and support others.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • A compassionate approach with a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for all pupils.
