Parkhead Community Primary School has been rewarded with sponsorship towards converting an old bus into a school library.

The Education Network loved the idea of converting the bus and was thrilled to support the school through sponsorship last year.

We believe the transformation of the Bus was not only a great use of old resources but a wonderful way to encourage children to read!

The Library Bus was officially opened November 13th 2015 by children’s author, Rob Lewis.

Lewis’s book are centred around friendship and usually feature friendly, animal characters. The author visited the school as part of the Northern Children’s book festival.

It was reported that parents and children visited the Library Bus all afternoon during the opening and stories were read out throughout the day, much to the enjoyment of all.

The school came up with the creative solution to solve their library space when they found an old Canadian ‘blue bird’ bus.

The school and community fundraised £10,500 towards the refurbishments. Parkhead Community also obtained a grant for £5000 from the Foyle Foundation for books as well.

Gateshead community fund also provided £1000 towards the furniture.

Clint McKellar, Senior Consultant at The Education Network, met Headteacher, Paula Bailey who said…

“Most importantly, the library is run by the children. It is a great chance to further build upon some of the key life skills we teach here”.

And we couldn’t agree more with you more Paula!
