More than 1,200 school pupils from across South Yorkshire competed in the School Games summer festival finals on Wednesday the 5th of July.

The South Yorkshire School Games summer festival took place across four venues, with an Olympic style opening ceremony taking place at Abbeydale Sports Club.

Great Britains very own former Olympian and 200m runner, Emily Freeman and England’s Strongest Man 2017, Phil Roberts attended the games to further promote sport and encourage the pupils participating to persevere and more importantly, have fun!

The Education Network, along with the Yorkshire Sport Foundation, sponsored and attended the finals which were held at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Club, and Whirlowbrook Hall.

The Education Network put together refreshment packs for all the primary and secondary schools attending and our anti-bullying mascot, Buddy even got involved, taking part in hockey, hula hooping, a conga line, tag rugby, tennis and more on the day.

Buddy was even at hand to support all the pupils and wish them good luck before the events.

Pupils competed in nine different sports, with Sheffield the most successful district, winning 17 gold, 14 silver and seven bronze medals. Doncaster and Rotherham schools both won two golds, two silver and five bronze medals each. Barnsley schools won seven medals – three silver and four bronze.

Sports included tennis, cricket, athletics, golf, tag rugby, hockey, orienteering, netball and an adventure challenge with the event supported by a team of more than 30 volunteers.

The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Education Network is a proud sponsor of the South Yorkshire School Games 2017 summer festival and will continue to support School Games and similar events as part of an ongoing commitment to support healthy living and fitness for all children of a school age.
