Teaching Assistants


Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Staff work in schools alongside teachers, providing valuable support for teaching and learning activities. This is a very rewarding role as it allows more time to each child to help them develop their potential.

The day-to-day tasks of teaching assistants include:
    • Helping pupils who need extra support to complete tasks
    • Planning, delivering and evaluating teaching and learning activities
    • Preparing the classroom for lessons
    • Observing pupil performance and reporting to the teacher.
If a teaching assistant has achieved higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) status they may be expected to take classes as part of their routine duties.

The education skills needed to be a teaching assistant:
    • Enjoy working with children
    • Ability to manage groups of pupils and deal with challenging behaviour
    • An ability to build good relationships with pupils and adults
    • Good organisational skills
    • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
